Use of the Basilica for Mass or Prayer Service

The Basilica of the Sacred Heart stands at the center of the University of Notre Dame, both physically and spiritually. It is quite naturally an attractive and compelling site for Masses and prayers for both campus-wide groups and smaller communities who wish to gather to pray.

Though at times it is difficult to balance the competing demands on the Basilica, the Office of Campus Ministry remains committed to maintaining a prayerful atmosphere and to welcoming groups who wish to reserve the space for liturgies. Campus Ministry also reserves the right to ask groups to consider another campus chapel when our musical and/or liturgical staff are unable to assist the group, or when an alternative location is of a more appropriate size or necessary due to a schedule conflict.

In order to best serve the campus and local communities, requests for weddings, baptisms, and funerals are not covered by this policy. You may visit basilica.nd.edu to learn more about requesting the Basilica for those liturgies.

A request to reserve the Basilica for a Mass or a prayer service may be made via an online form. Ordinarily, such requests are made one month in advance, and groups are generally expected to provide their own presider. Making the request is not the same as reserving the Basilica. A member of the Campus Ministry staff will let you know within a week of your request whether it has been approved. Whenever possible, if we are not able to honor your request, you will be invited to use a hall or academic chapel instead to meet your needs.
