About the Mass on TV
Masses at Notre Dame are marked by the full participation of the assembly in the liturgy. On Sundays, the Basilica is almost always filled to the church's capacity for its regularly scheduled liturgies. Faith and Values Media produces a block of religious programming every Sunday on Hallmark beginning with the Mass from Notre Dame at 7am ET.
On the music side:
The Women's Liturgical Choir, under Dr. Andrew McShane’s direction, provides music for the Mass during the academic year. The Basilica Schola, under Dr. Gail Walton's direction provides summer liturgy music. Special technical effort has been made to capture the choral voices as they are heard by the congregation in the Basilica.
On the production side:
- The low–profile equipment ensures minimal disruption to the solemnity of the Mass.
- The broadcast feed is sent from the Basilica to the WNDU-TV station and subsequently by satellite to Hallmark.
- Televised Mass is a three–man operation using six architecturally sensitive, robotic cameras.
- The cameras and audio equipment are remotely controlled from the basement of the Basilica.
- The University hired locally based Pentavision Communications, Inc., to undertake technical production. Other Notre Dame staff are part of the project team on programming.
